Civil rights are the protections and privileges of personal power given to all citizens by law under both Federal and State laws. They are rooted in the Constitution and are devised from the principles of this country’s Founding Fathers. Also commonly known as “civil liberties” common examples are:

  • The right to privacy and freedom from unreasonable search and/or seizure by the police or other State authority.
  • The right to equal treatment of all citizens, regardless of race, gender or other classification
  • The right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education for children with disabilities
  • The right to fair treatment for people with disabilities
  • The right to be free from harassment and/or abuse by police.
